Attendance Policy & Late Policy

Signing Out

Any student wishing to leave school during school hours must report to the office to signal that intention and get an excuse slip prior to leaving. Students under the age of 18 must have written permission from a parent/guardian explaining the reason for their departure from school in order to get an excuse slip. For medical purposes, or in an emergency, the school will attempt to make a telephone contact to receive permission. Students who have reached the age of majority (18) may sign their own notes to leave the school. Students who leave and subsequently return to school during school hours must report to the office upon return in order to properly be readmitted to class. Students are encouraged to stay in class unless serious circumstances warrant otherwise. Students who leave school during lunch or spares do so at their own risk.

Lates

Students arriving late for any class are to report directly to their scheduled class. Subject teachers will record the lateness on the attendance report or send the student to the office for an admit slip if the student has arrived after the attendance has been sent to the office. Teachers will remind students of the importance to be punctual. On the fourth late, when it becomes evident that the student's behaviour pattern has not changed despite the reminders, and classroom consequences, the teacher shall make a contact home to solicit help from the parent(s) and/or guardian(s). Continued lateness will result in a referral using the appropriate form to the Vice Principal.

  1. The Vice Principal will implement the "Student Late Policy".
  2. Once a referral has been made, the student will expect the following three steps:
    1. Call home by the Vice Principal explaining the student is now under the late policy and what the steps are to the parent/guardian. The student is returned to class.
    2. Call home to speak to parent/guardian by the Vice Principal. Student is not returned to class.
    3. If the student has not responded and improved the behaviour, a call will be made home and the student will receive a suspension.

If the student has responded by improving the behaviour (e.g. the student has not been late for some time) then Step Two may be repeated.

Note: Sleeping in, getting "caught" in heavy traffic, and malfunctioning alarm clocks are not acceptable reasons for lateness.
